How To: A Travel Friendly Carry-On Beauty Routine

Updated: Sep 28, 2022

After a hard pandemic and many long lockdowns throughout the country, it is a relief to finally see everyone back to exploring the world and travelling to spend time with their friends and family. Because we have all been in our homes for so long, I think we’ve almost forgotten how to navigate packing everything we love into a tiny suitcase! After recently travelling, I have picked up some essential organisation tips to make packing up your beauty routine a total breeze.

I would consider myself a relatively low-maintenance person in my everyday, but when it comes to being on a plane for 5+ hours, I need my skincare. A quick wash of your face can do wonders in providing a pep-up during a long flight or in the airport afterwards. Time to get into the nitty gritty and go through some luggage requirements to get you through the carry-on stress and some extra travel beauty hacks;

CARRY-ON GUIDELINES

The hardest part of a beauty routine in your carry-on bag is the limit on the amount of liquids you can bring. Below are the general travel guidelines for liquids that are common across most airlines but just to be safe, double check with your airline before your flight!

  • All liquids in your carry-on need to fit into 1 quart-sized ziplock/clear sealable bag

  • All liquids need to be under 3.4oz or >100mls

  • Your liquids bag also includes gels, creams and aerosols

  • Only 1 bag per passenger

It can seem a bit overwhelming with all of the requirements to fill, but things such as travel container sets can be great to simplify everything and help to decanter into little pots and tubes. They can be found in most chemists and online. Still running out of room in your zip lock? Pack solid bars instead - solid shampoo, conditioner, deodorant and even face wash can be a great alternative that don’t need to be put into the liquids bag.

MUST-BRING BEAUTY PRODUCTS

Travelling with a simplified beauty routine is necessary when you have liquid and weight requirements. Step back and have a look at what products you use everyday and which ones you can go a week or two without. These are my skincare non-negotiables that I use everyday:

  • Makeup remover/cleansing balm

  • Cleanser

  • Moisturiser

  • Sunscreen

  • 1 Treatment (Whether it is a retinol for anti-aging or one of the great acne treatments here)

  • Lip Balm

This is my simplified makeup routine that I take with me when I travel if I want to put a little bit of makeup on before I leave the airport (unfortunately it is hard to pack a full glam worth of product into your carry-on);

  • Mascara

  • Eyebrow pencil/powder

  • Concealer

  • Pressed Powder

  • Face Palette/Blush, Bronzer and Highlighter palette (I love taking one of these with me as you can use it all over the face, or even as eyeshadow in a pinch. With some bronzer in the crease and highlighter in the inner corner, it makes for a very soft and glowy eyeshadow look)

ON THE PLANE

Plane air is very dry as it gets recirculated throughout the entire flight. Make sure to stay moisturised as you fly by applying a thick moisturiser, misting occasionally and depending on how much of a pamper you are looking for, you could even put on a hydrating sheet mask. Don’t forget your lips too, treat them to a lip mask and lots of lip balm. Drinking lots of water will also keep you hydrated on the inside and your skin plump on the outside.

Travelling with a beauty routine can be hard to organise, luckily whatever can’t fit into your carry-on can always be brought in checked baggage if you need it. Hopefully today we have helped you to take the stress out of packing and given you some organisation inspiration! Where would you like to travel to next?  I am itching to go to Europe.

Have a wonderful day and happy travelling!
